Memory Care Costs

Memory Care costs are often tacked on to a base rate for a senior living apartment depending on the level of care required. Monthly rates typically cover meals, utilities, and activities. Additional fees may apply based on the level of service required. There are often a variety of apartment floor plans and sizes to choose from which may also affect pricing. It is often the onset of Alzheimer’s and dementia which pushes families to start investigating senior living with memory care. The cost can seem shockingly high, but remember to take into account all of the costs of staying at home, including everything from property taxes and food to the cost of a caregiver, when comparing current cost of living to that of a memory care scenario.

The national average cost of memory care for a single resident is almost $5,000 a month. This cost does vary widely depending on the setting, type of community, and level of care needed, with some communities as low as $1,500 per month and other communities as high as $7,000 per month.

Medicare does not usually pay for memory care though if given in a nursing home setting and the patient has run out of money Medicaid may pick up the tab.
