An independent living community may be ideal for those seniors who are able to live and function independently, but find home maintenance daunting, or no longer wish to live alone. The goal of independent living is to create an environment where residents remain as independent as possible, while the community provides the environment and services to make life easy, enjoyable, and healthy for independent senior residents. Independent living communities usually provide meals, social activities, and planned outings. With regular healthy meals, decreased stress, and plenty of activities and educational opportunities available, seniors in independent senior living communities often thrive compared to those who remain at home.
Independent living costs may be all inclusive, or the costs of particular services or activities may be added to a base monthly fee. Some independent living communities may require a one-time buy-in or entrance fee. Seniors in independent living communities won't receive care services. Unless the community is a CCRC, if an increased level of care is needed independent living residents may either hire in home care, or in some cases may be required to move to a care facility.
In general any retirement community designed specifically for seniors and not offering medical or personal care services may be called independent living communities. Independent living facilities may also be called senior apartments, retirement homes, or retirement communities.
