What is Assisted Living?
Assisted living is designed for seniors who are for the most part independent but may need a little bit of assistance with daily activities. The level of care given in assisted living is based on the specific needs of the individual patient but might include help with bathing and grooming, getting into or out of bed, dressing, light housekeeping, medication reminders. Sometimes the fees may be based on the level of care needed.
Assisted living is usually provided in an apartment style setting in a senior living community where there is a 24 hour staff and common spaces where social opportunities and activities abound. There may be a dining room, arts and crafts room, fitness center, library, chapel and many other common areas. Some assisted living facilities even have extensive grounds with opportunities for fresh air and even gardening. There are also many residential style homes providing assisted living in a family style setting with only 4-10 residents in a house in a residential neighborhood with live-in caregivers.
Many adults thrive in assisted living compared to staying in their own homes because assisted living residents have more opportunities to be active and social, and tend to eat better since all meals are provided for them. There is also a tremendous relief of the stress of homeownership and the everyday labor of maintaining a home. The intent of assisted living is to keep people as independent and active as possible by providing help and support in everyday tasks that have become difficult in a safe and supportive environment.
