ASSISTED LIVING AT CANDLE LIGHT COVE

Candle Light Cove is first and foremost a home, so it is designed to make our residents feel at home.

An inviting entrance with a cozy, enclosed porch leads into a large and attractively-appointed atrium-style living area where residents can enjoy a cup of coffee, play dominoes, participate in a craft project, sing along with the piano, or relax together to watch the news or a classic movie.

The Commons Area opens into the Dining Room, which connects to the family-style kitchen and a second enclosed porch. The home-cooking scents emanating from the kitchen entice everyone into the Commons Area for three generous, tasty meals - breakfast, lunch with a hot entree, and a light-fare supper featuring sandwiches, soups and salads. Off our back porch is a garden-style patio where residents can relax outdoors when weather permits.

On two wings are our resident suites, each including a bedroom and bath with walk-in shower. Each suite offers access to cable television and telephone service, and has a heating and air-conditioning unit that residents can adjust for personal comfort. Emergency pull-cords are mounted in every bath and bedroom. There are two double suites (two interconnecting bedrooms with a bath on either end). We encourage residents and their families to appoint and decorate according to their own tastes, but we also provide furnishings for anyone who prefers not to bring their own.

OUR CARE PROGRAM

Talk to any of our family members and you will learn that Candle Light Cove's reputation is for consistently excellent care, thanks to the quality of our staff, our small size and our low care ratio (1:8, not including management and nursing staff). Fostering our residents' independence, individuality, and dignity is a key focus of our orientation and training programs.

We offer on-site nursing care 16 hours daily, and our full-time Health Services Director is on-call when not on-site. Medication administration and monitoring are handled exclusively by nursing staff.

Care managers in the Tred Avon Alzheimer's Care Program are certified nursing assistants who also complete a training course including: patho-physiology of Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, symptom management, therapeutic activities, and using the self as a therapeutic tool.

Other guidance provided to care managers includes: problem-solving in symptom management and individualized care strategies; and tracking and documenting problem behaviors.

ASSESSMENT AND CARE PLANNING PROTOCOL

Each resident is assessed for his or her physical health and functional abilities at least every six months. Any resident who manifests a significant change in his medical or psychological baseline, or is hospitalized, will be reassessed to identify new or increased care needs. For every resident, the plan of care is reviewed on a quarterly basis and/or as needs change.

TIME WELL SPENT

We believe that time at Candle Light Cove should be time well spent. Our activities program, conducted by our full-time activities coordinator, includes a variety of diversions that are designed to stimulate, engage and entertain our residents. Daily exercise programs and walks, crafts and games, and visits from children's groups and Pets on Wheels are complemented by outings for picnics, luncheons, local music and theatre performances, and tours of local attractions.

Tred Avon activities are based on an assessment of residents' past interests, current abilities and the mix of individual personalities in the program.

"Life skills" (such as setting the table, folding laundry and gardening) capitalize on purposeful tasks learned over a lifetime and foster a sense of independence and accomplishment. Other activities - watching a classic movie, walking in the garden, singing, story-telling, playing ball or checkers -- can help maintain physical fitness, stimulate pleasant reminiscences and encourage social interaction. Some Tred Avon residents also participate in activities and excursions offered to Peach Blossom residents.

One-to-one activities can help to distract, redirect or refocus a resident experiencing negative emotions and associated difficult behaviors. We welcome family involvement in our activities program.

PROMOTING SAFETY AND INDIVIDUALITY

Candle Light Cove's Tred Avon program offers a uniquely home-like, comfortable and safe environment for those with significant cognitive loss. The building has been completely fitted for the needs of these special residents, and also accommodates the active participation of family members in the daily life of their loved one. Features include:

  • Doors and gates to unsecured areas are accessed only via key pad lock, but access to a secured garden area and patio is unfettered
  • Kitchen and medication rooms have half-doors that allow staff to monitor residents at all times, but can be opened from inside only
  • Windows can be raised to a maximum of six inches
  • Bathrooms illuminate upon entry and toilets are highlighted against dark backgrounds providing a visual cue to the purpose of the room
  • Private rooms that can be furnished and decorated as desired (furnishings are provided for those residents who do not bring their own)
  • Picture boxes filled with personal mementos help each resident identify his or her room
  • Individual heat/air conditioning units that can be adjusted and locked by staff for the resident's comfort
